Granted that this way of smoking is almost 500 years old, we will try to explain as simply as possible the principle on which the hookah is based.

The hookah works in a very simple way: a molasses, consisting of tobacco, honey and aromas contained in a bowl is heated using coconut charcoal.

The heated molasses is sucked into an ampoule containing water and the hot smoke, which comes into contact with the water, is vaporised and through a second tube in the central body of the hookah sucked up in the form of flavoured vapour.

In a very spartan manner we have explained how it works, which in practice allows you to inhale aromatised steam for a period that can range from a few minutes to a whole hour.

The principle is ingenious, it requires relatively poor equipment (the first ones were perforated coconuts and the smoking pipe was a cane) but a certain dexterity and a minimum of skill.

It is only smoked for the slow passage of time and to spend time with friends discussing everything or nothing, for the hookah the main thing is to create mystery and atmosphere.

Although using a hookah sounds simple, getting a good smoke is actually not as easy as you might think. Here are a few simple tips to get the most out of your hookah.

1. It may seem trivial but do not leave water in the hookah when you have finished smoking; wash it with bleach and lukewarm water and leave it to dry.
2. Use different bowl for different tastes, if you can.
3. Always use cold water, the smoke is better.
4. Coconut charcoal, forget about quick-ignition coals
5. A pinch of mint in each of your smokes will make the smoke fresher
6. Change your pipe if you haven’t used it for a long time or if you have used it a lot and it gets molasses on it.
7. Water: one and a half centimetres above the stem; if more than this, the smoke will be very strong and less light.
8. Finally, make sure there are no leaks in your hookah.
